Decoding “Harmony”: How a ceramic charm came to reflect how we develop together at SCDI

In Chiang Mai, elephants are known for their strength. But what makes them remarkable is not their size. It is how they move. Slowly. Attentively. They adjust their pace to one another, patiently waiting so that everyone can move forward together.

This idea not only resonates deeply with SCDI's approach to community development but also reflects how we work, grow, and care for one another as a team.

During our recent retreat in Chiang Mai, this shared understanding took shape in a small but meaningful gift - Harmony - a ceramic elephant charm created as a gesture of gratitude for SCDI members.

The charm was inspired by five qualities often associated with elephants: cooperation, community, generosity, empathy, and inclusion. These aren't just abstract ideas for us. They are practiced every day through collective effort, long-term commitment, and care for people whose voices are too often overlooked.

Each charm carries a distinct color, drawn from nature and from SCDI’s own visual language. Warm yellow reflects optimism and new beginnings. Deep forest green represents resilience built over time. Soft blue mirrors flowing water, reminding us of balance amid constant change. A special white edition brings all these colors together, symbolizing the ability to hold differences while moving as one.

The elephant’s form was designed from the letters P and C, referencing Community Development in SCDI’s name. It is both a cultural symbol rooted in Chiang Mai and a clear expression of our mission: to work patiently, persistently, and collectively for sustainable change.

Every detail marks a shared journey. The name SCDI. CNX, the airport code of Chiang Mai, anchors a moment of reflection and connection. Lai Prajam Yam - a traditional Thai floral motif symbolizing protection and peace. Together, they turn the charm into a record of belonging, not just a keepsake.

Handcrafted at a traditional ceramic workshop in Lai Thieu, each piece was shaped by hands and strengthened by fire. As clay endures fire to become strong, so do we evolve from individuals into a united team - standing firm, together.

“Harmony” isn’t just a gift. It is a reminder of a choice SCDI continues to make: to move forward together, to adjust our pace for one another, and to believe that lasting change is only possible when no one is left behind.
