On March 10, at the French Embassy in Hanoi, Dr. Khuat Thi Hai Oanh, Executive Director of the Center for Supporting Community Development Initiatives (SCDI), was honored with the rank of Knight of the National Order of Merit. The distinction recognized Dr. Oanh’s longstanding contributions to public health and her efforts to promote social inclusion for vulnerable communities in Vietnam.
The National Order of Merit (Ordre national du Merite) is one of the prestigious honors of the French Republic. It was established in 1963 by President Charles de Gaulle. The order is awarded to individuals whose careers, dedication, and commitment serve the public good. While it is often conferred upon French citizens, it is also granted to selected international figures whose contributions and commitments France wishes to recognize.
Speaking at the ceremony, French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet emphasized that over several decades, as both a physician and the founder of SCDI, Dr. Khuat Thi Hai Oanh has devoted her efforts to HIV/AIDS prevention, defending the rights of people living with HIV, and promoting a humane and inclusive approach to public health. The Ambassador also acknowledged her work in connecting communities, government agencies, and international partners, helping bring the voices of Vietnamese community-based organizations to regional and global platforms.
In her remarks upon receiving the honor, Dr. Khuat Thi Hai Oanh shared that she accepted the award not only as recognition of her own work, but also as a tribute to colleagues, community members, and partners who have persistently advanced a humane approach to addressing public health challenges. According to Dr. Oanh, sustainable change can only be achieved when community voices are heard and when solutions are developed together with the people most directly affected.
